What does it mean to be a refugee or displaced? It means that you had to leave your home country because it was not safe for you. This could be because of war, natural disasters, or because the government was not protecting you. Displaced means a bigger group of people who had to leave their homes because of violence or other bad situations in their country. Right now, this is what is currently happening in Sudan. Wave after wave of refugees and displaced groups of people. But what does it actually mean and feel like to be a refugee?
Food, some clothes, the most valuable possessions, and documents, along with determination, courage, hope, and prayers, were the things that a refugee can bring as they go through their journey of saving their lives. These stories were told and heard multiple times but it was different when experienced firsthand.
The war in Sudan began on Saturday as gunshots and missiles filled the quiet normal city of Khartoum. Nothing will be the same again, things are going from bad to worse, and still ongoing.
Let’s give our eyes, ears, and attention to Sudan and what’s happening there. Even small contributions, like sharing stories and updates, can make a difference. After all, oceans are composed of billions of drops of water, and every little bit counts.
I will be writing blogs about survivors of Sudan. And I would like to thank the people I contacted with for sharing their stories. If you would like to share your stories please let me know, together we can do something good.
I want to talk about Sudan here more in my upcoming blogs, and I will create a special page and post just for it. The title will be Irin for Sudan. I see refugees as warriors of survival, a symbol of bravery who have overcome unimaginable obstacles and who made the toughest decision to be alive. I believe that their stories are worth telling as it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, hope, possibilities, rebuilding, and new beginnings.
